Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL)

The Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning’s missions is to lead the Institute to a teaching and learning standard of excellence. CETL is committed to faculty development, assessment, and support. The center enhances Tech’s learning and teaching environment by encouraging a fully engaged, sharing community with communication networks, resources, and innovative programs.

The following faculty programs are in place to address the center’s mission:

Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award

This award is open to any nominated full time tenure-track faculty member who does not yet have tenure. Faculty members are evaluated on the following:

  • Educational innovations
  • Connections between research and teaching
  • Educational outreach beyond the classroom and laboratory
  • Teaching excellence in core classes, required classes, and large classes
  • Accessibility to all students, even those who are not performing well in the class
  • Impact on students’ lives, beyond the classroom
  • Passion about teaching and learning
  • Good Georgia Tech citizenship

Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows

The Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows program is designed for untenured faculty members to develop their pedagogical techniques and to sharpen their individual skills through classroom observations, videotape critiques, student dialogs conducted by a CETL professional, seminars, and a teaching project.

Senior Teaching Fellows

The Senior Teaching Fellows program was established as a means for faculty who are past the tenure hurdle to rejuvenate and refresh their teaching. It is designed for associate professors and professors who want to learn about new advances in pedagogy and educational technology and who are interested in expanding their network of colleagues on campus.

Faculty Development Seminar Series

The Faculty Development Seminar Series provides resources for faculty members to enhance teaching. The following are examples of offered seminars:

  • Showcase of Campus Uses of Instructional Technology
  • How to Edit and Review Academic Writing More Efficiently
  • Technology in the Classroom - What do Faculty/Students Want and Need?
  • Learning and Teaching Styles
  • Assessment of Instruction

Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology (WST)

The Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology links issues in the study of science and technology with those of gender, culture, and society. Growing out of the interdisciplinary Ivan Allen College undergraduate minor in Women, Science, and Technology (WST), the Center brings together faculty and students, addressing issues of gender, science, and technology in research and programmatic initiatives. In key characteristics, the WST Center is interdisciplinary, cooperative in partnerships with students, and collaborative across Georgia Tech Colleges and in alliances with Atlanta-area colleges and universities and Georgia Tech alumnae.

Goals:

  • Expand and enhance research on women, science, and technology.
  • Establish and expand collaboration among faculty and between students and faculty through Center research and programmatic initiatives, and through joint ventures with related Georgia Tech programs, including the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC), Women in Engineering, and the Women’s Resource Center.
  • Enrich and establish the national prominence of its interdisciplinary research programs through programmatic ventures, such as the WST Lecture Series.
  • Provide research-based practice and policy toward improved participation and performance of women in scientific and technological education and careers.
  • Support the instruction and development of students in the classroom and through partnerships with faculty in WST research and programmatic initiatives.
  • Link Atlanta-area researchers, entrepreneurs, and technologists with shared interest in improving human resources of both women and men for science and technology, thereby connecting Georgia Tech to regional universities, industry, and government.

Office of Employee Relations Services

The Office of Employee Relations Services is responsible for the Institute’s Equal Employment (EEO) program. The office monitors employment processes for equity and nondiscrimination, as well as, provides a forum for dispute resolution for complaints related to violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended and the Georgia Fair Employment Practices Act.

The office also provides strategic planning for diversity for the Institute. The office establishes and updates diversity policies, implements and monitors diversity programs and initiatives, reports to executive leadership on the progress towards diversity goals, and consults with campus units on diversity issues.

Ombuds Office

The Ombuds Office provides confidential and informal assistance for faculty and staff apart from the formal grievance procedures for resolving Institute-related concerns. The Ombuds Office focuses on early intervention and counseling, facilitation, and the exploration of options to resolve complaints. The office also provides mediation services to individuals or groups to resolve conflict.
